Credit Building Action Plan
Follow these exact steps to establish or rebuild your credit score. No gimmicks, just the math of the FICO system.
1. Pull Your Free Reports
Go to AnnualCreditReport.com (the ONLY federally authorized site) and check for errors or items in collections. Dispute any inaccuracies immediately.
2. Open a Secured Card
If your score is below 600 or you have no history, start with a secured card. You put down a deposit (e.g., $200) which becomes your credit limit.
3. Keep Utilization Under 10%
If your limit is $200, never let your statement balance exceed $20. Better yet, pay it off in full multiple times a month.
4. Turn on Statement Balance Autopay
Payment history is 35% of your FICO score. A single 30-day late payment can drop your score by 100 points. Set up autopay for the FULL STATEMENT BALANCE every month.
5. Graduate to Unsecured
After 6-12 months of on-time payments, request graduation to an unsecured version of your card to get your deposit back. Don't close the secured card if it has no annual fee.
